Vivienne Light

Vivienne was born (1947) in West Dorset and initially studied music and art during the late 1960s at Dartington College of Arts, Devon. She received a Masters degree in 1995, the same year in which she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

For over twenty-five years she was active in music, art, education and research in both schools and universities. She was a reviewer for a number of academic journals, gave conference presentations and published papers on the subject of computer mediated learning and the use of video conferencing for student collaboration across cultures. Part of the latter research took place at Winchester School of Art.

In 1994 she was a founding member of the UK based organization Paper weight. She later became a member and Chair of 2D3D South Contemporary Art. She has participated in, and led, a number of community arts projects, taken part in BBC radio broadcasts about papermaking and in 2004 took parts in an arts based ‘Open Country' Radio 4 programme. She has run numerous workshops, curated around twenty five exhibitions and co-curated an exhibition for Mino City Paper Museum, Japan.

Today she practices as an artist, exhibition curator, freelance arts writer (catalogues, reviews, texts for galleries and arts magazines) and is author of seven books and editor of many others. In 2000 she established an independent arts press, Canterton Books, which focuses on national and international artists with a South West connection.
For many years she was on the management board of Walford Mill Crafts Centre, Wimborne, retiring as Chair in 2007. She was on the Arts Loan Committee at the University of Winchester and is currently a member of the exhibition committee at Dorset County Museum, Dorchester.
