Martyn Brewster's reputation is mainly as a painter of colourful abstract and landscape works. However, he has been equally productive as a serious print maker for over thirty years. This is the first full account and appreciation of his abstract colour prints, concentrating particularly on the last twenty years since he developed a personal style and technique of printing. He predominantly uses the silkscreen method to produce wonderfully vibrant and unique painterly prints.
REVIEWS:
Galleries Issue 300 With a handsome new monograph on his prints just out Vivienne Light & Simon Olding and a show of his latest ‘Heartsong' monoprints and paintings currently showing at Jill George, 2008 is proving to be quite a significant year for this underrated British abstractionist. Painting and printmaking have always been closely linked activities for Brewster, each contributing powerfully to the rich, layered textures of colour that characterise his work. Nicholas Usherwood, May 2008
Daily Echo Praised both nationally and internationally, his works are, with occasional exceptions, brilliantly colourful abstracts…they're exhibited worldwide, lauded by critics and prised by collectors. ..Analysing Brewster's work is no easy task. It really does speak for itself. This point is made far more eloquently than I could put it in an exceptional new book….Apart from stunning reproductions, this high quality publication contains insightful essays by artist, musician and writer Vivienne Light and the former Director of Bournemouth's Russell_cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Simon Olding. Jeremy Miles
Wessex Muse Magazine. April 2008 This latest collaboration of Vivienne Light & Simon Olding results in another triumph of a book from the Canterton Stable. Crammed with rich illustrations of the artist's work from the last three decades it shows his development as a printmaker while Light & Olding map this journey in words…[The authors'] explorations range from the intuitive to the cerebral… it is evident that they are knowledgeable and informed… captivated by their subject. This is more than a beautifully produced book, it is an insight into the working of a prolific, passionate artist. Gill Kaye, Editor
